Utility Detection: Electromagnetic Survey

It is estimated that in the Utility Industry alone, four million trenches and holes are dug each year, at a cost of £1 billion. Many of these holes are dug without the excavator knowing exactly what they might find. “Safedigging provide the solution"

A full underground Utility survey is the most comprehensive mapping service on the market; At Safedigging we understand the importance of good quality, up to date, reliable utility information and pride ourselves on providing precisely that, right down to the smallest detail.

By utilising the latest in subsurface detection techniques, including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Radio Frequency Locators, Safedigging can work virtually anywhere to locate and mark out the depth, position and type of all buried utilities.

Safedigging will find services including electrical cables, steel mains pipes, plastic gas and water pipes, fibre optic ducts, concrete sewers and clay drainage pipes down to a depth of up to 2m.

Once all of the perimeters have been identified, Safedigging will use appropriate equipment in a proven and methodical manner. All services found will immediately be marked (together with relevant depths where possible) using specialist biodegradable paints, with different colours to indicate utility type.

Safedigging provide a comprehensive suite of complimentary services, each designed and optimised to suit particular jobs, type and size of sites, timescales and budgets. This truly makes Safedigging the one stop shop for all your dig preparation and utility detection, mapping and survey needs

Safedigging services are HSE & PAS128 compliant and cost effective making them hard to ignore.

All of our surveyors receive comprehensive training from both in-house and external sources, having completed SPA Careers, NRSWRA & Confined Space training as well as being CRB checked. In addition, our Supervisors have completed IOSH Managing Safely training.

Utility Detection: GPR Survey

GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) is now widely accepted as a key technology in the increasingly difficult task of locating underground services, particularly those utilities of a non-metallic nature.

GPR is non-invasive and enables Safedigging to detect all types of underground services, whether they are metallic pipes, electrical mains, PE ducts, fibre optic cables, plastic gas or water services, clay drainage systems or concrete sewers.

A ground probing radar (“GPR”) is a device that uses radio waves for the purpose of detecting or obtaining images of buried objects, or determining the physical properties beneath the ground. The emissions from a GPR are intentionally directed down into the ground for this purpose, and systems are designed to operate only when in contact with, or within close proximity to the ground.

Safedigging Ltd was awarded its GPR licence by the Radio Licensing Regulator (OFCOM) in 2007. The licensing scheme aims to protect ultra-wideband frequencies and limit GPR use in certain sensitive areas (i.e. near military sites). Safedigging recognises these requirements and understands its obligations under the licensing scheme.

Desktop Mapping Service

When planning a dig it is normal to request a set of utility 'stats' from all or any utility provider you may believe has apparatus in that location. You are faced with two main problems:

With a single click or call to our "Safe Dig" number 0800 689 5315, Safedigging will canvass all known asset owners within your excavation area and compile a concise and professional safe dig information pack. Once complete, the pack will be returned by post.

We will collate all the 'stats' you have received onto a single Safedigging drawing, overlaid onto either a topographical survey or an OS tile background. Furthermore, in the early stages of planning we can even obtain the stats for you, using our Utility Records Search Service.

Safedigging Ltd is the only one stop-shop and the first choice for the collation of asset information. Arming you with comprehensive underground information - a key element of a safe system of work.

Electronic Trial Box

Our tailor made approach to utility detection along with our commitment to offering the client 'what they want' has led us to introduce the electronic cross section or safe dig trial box scan as an alternative to the standard Utility Detection site investigation request.

This service is now becoming more and more popular, especially in built up areas due to its non-intrusive method of data collection. Using the latest GPR radar and RFL radio frequency locators an area normally of 3m x 3m is scanned to locate underground utilities.

A scan area photograph will be taken and combined with the gathered cross section information to produce an electronic format image as well as a 3D overview to ensure the client has an excellent record of the scan site. Aerial photography will also be included for the electronic cross section scan to provide that extra detail.
